Are your cosmetic claims built on thin air? (The mistake 90% of brands make)

“12-hour wear.” You see it everywhere: on foundation bottles, on perfume flacons, on tubes of moisturiser. But let’s be honest for two minutes. When a brand promises 12 hours of wear, what really happens behind the scenes of the consumer test? Too often, reality looks like this:

  • “I applied it this morning… I think.”
  • “Oh, I was supposed to answer the questionnaire at 8 pm? Well, it’s 10:30 pm, that’ll do.”
  • “Not ‘about a day’, more like whenever I remembered.”

Spoiler: no, that will not do. A result collected at T10h30 or T14h does not tell the same story as one measured at exactly T12h. If your protocol accepts approximation, your marketing arguments are worth nothing.

The approximation trap: why “roughly” kills your credibility

When a marketing message announces a precise duration, the evaluation must respect it to the minute. Otherwise you are no longer measuring your promise: you are measuring chance. This demand for precision is vital as soon as a product carries a time-based promise:

  • Make-up: the wear of a foundation or lipstick.
  • Skincare: the comfort and hydration of a cream throughout the day.
  • Fragrance: the persistence of a scent after several hours.
  • Hygiene: the long-lasting effect of a deodorant or hair product.

So how do you make sure the volunteer really evaluates the product 12 hours after application, and not whenever they have five minutes free?

SYRES’s secret weapon: digital timestamping

We believe the validity of a test must not rest on testers’ good memory. That is why we use a tool as discreet as it is formidable: the built-in timestamp. The principle is simple but surgical. The volunteer applies the product and completes a first questionnaire immediately after application, on our app or web interface. The exact time is locked by the system. She then completes the wear questionnaires at the times set by the protocol (for instance T12h). The system automatically verifies that a full 12 hours elapsed between application and answer. This is not an administrative detail: it is a condition of scientific validity.

From technical detail to marketing proof

In the ultra-competitive world of cosmetics, timestamping moves your tests from “sworn statement” to irrefutable proof. By choosing this rigour, you obtain proof that the experience was conducted at the exact moment, proof that the data collected matches the expected use, and proof that your marketing claim rests on a solid, unassailable evaluation.

Choose your side

Between a rigorously measured “12-hour wear” and “wear until the volunteer finds time to answer”, there is a world of difference. At SYRES that world has a name: rigour. Stop letting chance dictate the value of your promises. Want consumer tests that protect your brand and scientifically validate your claims? Get in touch.
